Read Romans 4
It has always been about faith. Abraham discovered that he couldn't be saved by his works because he blew it numerous times. David sang about the forgiveness of God because he needed and received God's forgiveness. These two men saw into the heart of God by faith. Abraham and David were Jews, so what about these uncircumcised Gentiles? Since Abraham was counted as righteous before he was circumcised because of his faith this was the picture of grace and related to the Gentiles. Abraham was also the spiritual father to the circumcised Jew only if he had the faith that Abraham had before he was circumcised. If you believe that God is who he said he is then you will WANT to follow his laws. They will protect you.
God took Abraham out on a starry night and told him that he would have as many descendants as the stars. At that point Abraham had no descendants but it says he believed what God said would happen. His belief was counted to him for righteousness. (Gen 15:5)
The law points out your sin. If there was no law to tell you to drive 55mph you would only have your common sense to tell you how fast to drive, but it would not be a sin to drive 65. Because we have laws telling us to drive 55, we are breaking the law to drive faster.
It bears out in scripture that the bigger the promise God has given you the greater the obstacle against it happening. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 99 which was way past childbearing age. They have one son of promise and yet through this one child God's promises were fulfilled. Faith may not look right in our eyes but it is always right in God's. He loves to do what is impossible to man.
Lord, help us to not stagger at your promises when there seems no way but be like Abraham who was strong in faith, gave glory to God, and was fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
