Fri.'s Devo - Our Servant Friend

Read Pro. 12:9
Proverbs is a Biblical guide about how to live your life. It seems to be written to everyone - Christian and non. This verse says that you are better off if you are hated and at least have a servant than if you are conceited and starving. I think this verse is speaking of humility. If you have a servant you at least know that you can't do it all yourself so your servant helps you. If you think too much of yourself and are trying to do life by yourself you are starving needlessly. The truth is that we are meant to be connected. We do need each other. We are a body with Christ as the head. We need both our arms and legs and all our other parts that are under our skin that noone sees. In fact, the parts that we don't see are the most vital. We can live without a finger, but we can't live without a heart. Sometimes we may feel despised by the world, or even our friends but we have a servant called the Holy Spirit who is our helper. We are never without his help or friendship. He is so much more than a friend. Remember the story of Jonathan and David? Jonathan loved David so much he gave him his undying loyalty. He even gave him his right to the throne. Jonathan is the Holy Spirit in our lives. He is here to help us get where we are destined by God to go.
Lord, help us to connect not only with your body but with your Holy Spirit. Thank you that we are not in this alone.

Thurs.'s Devo - The Good and the Bad

Read Pro. 12:5-8
I've been a Christian since I was 6 so it is hard for me to remember what it was like not knowing God. The more I read the Bible I realize that God has always had a chosen race and then there are the wicked. The wicked are made for destruction. Their goal is deceit, murder, and perversion. They will never know God and were not made to. This is hard for us to understand if we believe that God is a good god which he is, but we have to read the whole scripture to understand God's ways. In Ps. 11:5 it says that God hates the soul of the wicked. Ex. 23:7 says that God will not justify the wicked. Hell is reserved for them. They have no inheritance in God so they have no future. On the other hand, God desires that all be saved and brought to the knowledge of him, he just knows who they are. We live in time but God does not and he sees the end from the beginning. He knows who are his and who are not. For those that he has chosen, he has given them his thoughts. Our house will stand and our inheritance will live eternally. By the word of our mouth, we will be delivered from the evil intents of the wicked.
Lord, help us to walk as your chosen people, called out of this world to do your works for your glory.

Wed.'s Devo - The Virtuous Woman

Read Pro. 12:4
What is a virtuous woman? Proverbs 31 will give you a whole list but the meaning of virtuous is "a force, whether of men, means or other resources; an army, wealth, valor, strength. God told the kings of the Old Testament to not marry foreign wives because they would turn their hearts away from Him. As women, we have a dynamic power that can be wielded for good or for bad. If we use our power to worship God and follow his commands then we will love our families and be a positive power. Our husband will receive the necessary strength from us that he needs to complete his destiny and we will be blessed in ours. We will be a crown to him; the symbol of his authority. If we use our power to manipulate and get what we want when we want it we will be as decay to his bones. We will cause him to lose his strength and he will not be able to stand strong for his family. When we support our husbands and give them the authority they are meant to have in the family everyone prospers. There is nothing passive in the definition of virtuous so we are strongest when we obey and submit. That is not a very popular statement in this day we are living but the kingdom we are to live in is right side up; this world is upside down.
Lord, help us to see that taking the low road of humility is always the road to promotion.

Tues.'s Devo - Dig Deep

Read Pro. 12:3
Ps. 1 gives us a description of the blessed man who walks with God. In verse 3 it says that we are to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bring forth fruit in our season; our leaves will not wither and whatsoever we do shall prosper. We are to have roots that are not moved. That means that when the storms of life hit us we won't be swayed and moved by them. Our roots get their strength and nourishment from the water which is the Word of God. This gives us the confidence to stand on God's promises until we see them manifest. That means that we don't give up or give in to what the devil has planned for us. If God has planned to prosper us and give us a hope then you can imagine what the devil has planned for us. Today's verse says that a man shall not be established by wickedness. Wickedness has no stability or hope. It is deceptive and will not hold us up under pressure. The devil will set you up for failure, but God's path is the road to success and a future. He loves us so much that he wrote eternity on our hearts so that we will always have hope.
Lord, may our roots go deep into the soil of your Word.

Mon.'s Devo - The favor of the Lord

Read Pro. 12:2
We can walk or run in the favor of the Lord. We should live in the favor of God. When I went to pay the balance of the house I got at the Sheriff's sale I was to bring a certified check for the remaining 90% of the sale. I had my check and brought it the morning of the hearing. When I went to pay it they informed me that I was over $400 under the right amount. The lawyer was there and said I would have to forgo the sale since the hearing was in 10 minutes and the judge wouldn't wait. I told her I would be back and ran out the door to the bank down the street. I told the bank my plight and they had to rewrite the check and wait for approval. It was now 10 minutes past the time for the hearing to start. I took off my shoes and ran 3 blocks back to the court house, up the escalator and to the desk where I had to pay. That took an extra 7 minutes because they were in no hurry. I then ran back down stairs and into the room where the hearing was. I flew into the room and it was still in process. The lawyer turned around and I told her I had paid it. I was right in time. In fact the next house was mine. That was the favor of God. I told the devil he was not getting my house while I was standing impatiently at the bank. I didn't know how it was going to happen but I just knew God would work it out and he did. I realized after it was all over that I did bring the right amount....they just upped the price without telling me. The end of the verse says that God will condemn the devises of the enemy.

Fri.'s Devo - The Learning Curve

Read Pro. 12:1
Are we teachable? I once heard that a good definition of meekness is being teachable. I love teaching and I love to be taught but I am not so fond of reproof. This verse says that if we love instruction then we love knowledge and if we hate reproof then we are stupid. That would make me stupidly loving knowledge - not a good mix. Being taught and being reproved both require us to be humbled. God promises to lift up the humble and not forget their cry for help. Jesus said that whoever humbled themselves as a little child would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. We will never be at the place where we know everything so we will always need teachers and we will never be perfect so we will always need rebukes. If we could just realize that knowledge and rebuke save us from many troubles. Heeding our teachers and receiving their rebukes make us wise and better people. Even Jesus learned obedience through the things he suffered. So why should we think we would not have to do that too.
Lord, make us teachable and quick to repent. Forgive us of our pride and help us to walk in humility.

Thurs.'s Devo - Fruit that Remains

Read Pro. 11:30-31
The Bible has much to say about fruit. In John 15:4 Jesus said, "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me." He goes on to say in verse 16 that God has chosen and ordained us to go and bring forth fruit, and that our fruit should endure and remain. If we carry the seed of God in us then our fruit is the tree of life. Those who come to us and eat of our fruit will be saved. This is what make us complete and restores us. When a tree is pruned of its fruit, it can bear more fruit than before. The same is true to us, the more we give to others the life that we hold inside then the more fruit we will bear. This is true of the good and the evil. The more evil an evil person gives out the more evil they become. There is no staying the same. We are either becoming more alive and fruitful or more decayed and unfruitful. So let's choose life that we and our children can live.
Lord, we choose to bear fruit fit for the kingdom. We love to see people come into the family. Make us wise winners of souls.

Wed.'s Devo - The Wise of Heart

Read Pro. 11:29
God loves family. He uses this institution to give us a picture of his kingdom and his great love for his children. We learn how to interact with people in the framework of the home. It is our training ground. I once heard a wise man say, "If it doesn't work at home, don't export it." So if we bring turmoil and trouble to our home our inheritance will be the wind or destruction. The wind is a symbol of the Holy Spirit which can come as a gentle breeze or a tornado. If trouble brings the tornado, then kindness will bring the gentle breeze and we can choose which one we will carry.
We seem to have the hardest time with our families some times but families bring out the real issues in our heart. They are a great sandpaper to sand off the rough edges so let's let that happen. If we don't, we will have splinters that will hurt anyone who touches our lives.
The second part of this verse says the the fool will serve the wise of heart. If we choose to be kind, peaceable, and forgiving in our families, we will be the wise of heart. If we choose to hold grudges and be hard to live with we will be the fool.
Lord, help us to be wise of heart and honor our families that we might inherit the gentle breeze of your Holy Spirit in our lives.

Tues.'s Devo - Give Extravagantly

Read Pro. 11:24-28
God loves to pour out blessings on his children but we are the ones who determine how generous God can be with us. I heard a story about a prince that went up to a beggar and asked him for some of his rice. The poor man begrudgingly gave him three grains of rice. So the prince, in turn, reached into his bag and gave the beggar 3 gold pieces. That is how it is in the kingdom. We serve an extravagant God who wants us to give extravagantly so he can bless us back extravagantly. The beggar missed his opportunity. We should give out of a generous heart that has been blessed abundantly with salvation. It is not ours to judge the need or the cause but the voice in our spirit. If we give out of our need, God can give us what we need. You can't out-give God. So if you want God to water your garden of finances then water someone else's gardern of finance. If you need someone to give you their time, then give your time away. It is the principle of reaping and sowing. The true riches are wisdom, understanding, love, truthfulness, etc.
Lord, help us to seek you first above anything this workd has to offer.

Mon.'s Devo - The Goodness of God

Read Pro. 11:23
"The desire of the righteous is only good." I had to think about this one, but it is true: if you are righteous then you think what God thinks. God desires good and works everything toward that end so we will do the same because he is in us. When we become a new creature we get God's nature. We then choose to follow our new nature or revert back to the pattern or our old nature. If we want to grow then we will allow the things that God loves to be the things that we love and the things he hates, the things we hate. It is impossible to have the desires of God and be depressed or hopeless. God sees the good in the worse criminal and the worse situations. When we think there is no way to fix something, God always has an answer. He has an answer to the oil spill, the economy, divorce, abuse, etc and it is good.
But the wicked can only look forward to the wrath of God. Because God is good, he disciplines sinners, judges rightly, and destroys the ungodly. We sometimes get that mixed up and think that God should let everyone go free no matter what they have done. God has to judge the wicked because he is a good God.
Lord, by your kindness lead your people to repentance. May we desire you goodness in us and love the things you love and hate the things you hate.

Sat.'s Devo - Open Doors

Read: Matt. 16:19
This week was the first week in my house. I left the courthouse and couldn't wait to get to a locksmith and have them open my new house. I wanted to rekey the place anyway so that was fine with me. Good for me, I found one close. Since I bought it off the Sheriff's sale the lawyer had told me that if I didn't want to wait for 3 weeks to get in I would need to break in. David, the locksmith, told me he could come out tomorrow. TOMORROW?!?! I told him I couldn't wait till tomorrow; I had already waited too long so he told me he would send someone out today just to let me in and come rekey it tomorrow. That was better so I went to the house to wait. While I was sweating on the hot porch waiting for him something told me to try the back door. I had tried the back door every time I brought someone over to see the house and it was locked tight. This time it just opened! God reminded me of the scripture that he would open a door that no man can shut, and shut a door that no man could open. I was so excited. I timidly went in in case someone was in there, but no one was and nothing looked touched. I started out the front door to go tell the locksmith he didn't need to come, when he drove up. I told him I got it open and he told me there would be no charge and he would come come the next day and rekey all the locks. Well, later that day I walked over to my lawyer across the street to let him know how the closing went and when I came back I had locked myself out. This time there was no door that magically opened so I walked a mile and a half to the locksmith's in the sweltering heat. He came and let me in AGAIN. I guess when God opens a door you need to keep it open till He shuts it. Now I have keys and can come and go anytime I want to. That reminds me of the keys God gave us. The keys to the kingdom that whatsoever we bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever we loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. We need to use our keys.
Lord, once again I thank you for your awesome grace that you pour out on your children. Let us not forget that we have been given powerful

Fri.'s Devo - What are you Wearing?

Read Pro. 11:22
I remember going to the fair when I was young and seeing the big pigs in their pens. They were some of the ugliest animals I had ever seen and they stunk. I can't imagine seeing a diamond in one of their snouts. I know this, If one of them had a gem in their nose, I would not want to get close to examine the beauty of the jewel because of the unpleasantness of the pig. That is the same way it is when a beautiful woman is without discretion. Her lack of self-respect takes away from her beauty and makes you want to look away instead of admiring her. We are suppose to honor God is everything we do: how we dress, how we carry ourselves and how we honor the body God has given us. We want people to be drawn to us so we can share with them the hope we have in Jesus.
The priests wore the ephod that had the stones of the tribes on their vest. We are to shine like those stones. Is. 61:10 says that God clothes us with the garments of salvation: the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom desks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Lord, may our beauty be salvation and righteousness and may others be drawn to your great light.

Thurs.'s Devo - The Contrast of Good and Evil

Read Pro. 11:16-21
The next few scriptures are full of contrasts. A kind woman will be honored but a tyrant will only get riches. When a person is merciful to others it benefits his own soul but a cruel person hurts his self. The wicked have to make their living scamming people, but the righteous are rewarded for their honesty. The life of the righteous brings life but the life of the wicked brings death. The person with a distorted heart is hated by God but the ways of the godly are his delight. Even when the wicked join together they will be destroyed and the children of the righteous will be saved. It just makes sense to follow God. Those who chose to follow their own passions are deceived. They don't realize that God created them with a purpose and he will help them achieve that goal. How sad for them and how sad for us when we fight God and don't just surrender to his will. God's will is the only place we will find the joy and peace that we all seek.
Lord, we chose to follow you and make your will ours.

Wed.'s Devo - The Lender is Servant to the Lendee

Read Pro. 11:15
Maybe the banks should have taken this advise. If you lend to a stranger, then you will end up hurting. I wonder what would have happened if banks decided to do more homework and look deeper into a persons past dealings with loans and were more select in who they gave their money to. I don't think they would be in the shape they are in. I saw a house that a very rich man built with 90,000 square feet of house. He had opulent rooms. His master bedroom was much larger than my whole house with a huge skylight in the roof. It had every amenity you could think of and all the opulence of King Solomon's house. The owner ran out of money before he got the walls up and went bankrupt. The bank was trying to sell it "as is" for 75mil. That is the kind of thing that brings our nation down. We end up paying for someone else's folly and bad banking.
The end of the scripture says that if you hate becoming a bondsman you will be confident and sure. What if this man who was building this huge house would have paid for it as he built it instead of borrowing. He might not have had as large of a house but he would have had a house when it was all over and he could be proud of it instead of ashamed.
Lord, we are all indebted to you and you stamp us "paid in full". Thank you for the blood of Jesus that never runs out or loses its power.

Tues.'s Devo - Great Advise

Read Pro. 11:14
"Where there is no counsel, the people fall..." Let's just look at the first part. Imagine not having the Word or anyone with experience to bounce things off of or go to for advise. The Word is the best counsel there is but sometimes you need the help of other people. They can give you another perspective or experiential knowledge that can be invaluable. I have just purchased an older house for my business and God's business, but before I bought it I took a myriad of people over to the house to ask them their opinion. Then I called our accountant, our lawyers, our insurance agent, and my mother to ask them what they thought about it. I valued their opinion and their advise. I know that I can get so excited about something that I will overlook the obvious because of my emotions, but they all encouraged me on so I pursue it. But most of all I talked to God about it. He seemed to be parting the waters for me to buy it so I just kept walking in that direction. Without counsel, it is easy to fall into pitfalls.
"...But in the multitude of counselors there is safety." It is comforting to have people advising you and warning you of any problems they can foresee. Then you can be prepared ahead of time for any problem that might be obvious to others. For me, it has been so much fun to have people join with me and be a part of what God is doing in my life. I don't feel alone in this risky adventure and I have people around me to encourage me and celebrate with me. God did not mean for us to do life by ourselves. Those are my pastor's famous words. We were designed for fellowship and to function as a body so we need one another.
Lord, help us to humble ourselves and ask for advise and help from our other members. Tues.'s

Mon.'s Devo - Relationships

Read Pro. 11:12-13
God is so interested in our relationship with him and with others. It is unwise to strive with your neighbor who you are going to have to live beside for years. It would be better to make peace and hold your tongue. Then you can rest in peace knowing that your neighbor is a wall of protection for you and not someone to fear.
Another thing God is interested in is our self-control which is a fruit of the spirit. If you gossip about people you are revealing the secrets of some one's heart. If you are truly wanting to live a life pleasing to God you will cover them. That is what you would want someone to do for you. Whenever I am tempted to talk about someone I try to remember that if I do then I am opening a door for someone to expose me and talk about me the same way. Then I have to make a decision whether to do it or not because the stakes are high. The law of reaping what you sow is a law to the Christian and the non-Christian. It can be a positive law or a negative one depending on how you live. The thing about covering others is that God will cover you. Thank you Lord, that your scripture says that you will hide us in your sanctuary. You will place us out of reach on a high rock. We will hold our head high above our enemies who surround us and we will offer shouts of joy in praise of You. (Ps. 28:5-6)

Fri.'s Devo - Speak Blessings

Read Pro. 11:9-11
More scriptures about the power in our mouth. A hypocrite can destroy a neighbor with his mouth. That means even though what he says about his neighbor is not true, he can bring him down with his lies. That is pretty scarry, but not for the righteous, because the rest of the verse says that the just will be delivered through knowledge. One of our friends got cleared of a charge that was brought against him by a neighbor. That accusation ruined his life. He lost his marriage, his livelihood, his reputation, and his hope. All because of words. The good news is that God will use all that for the good of this man if he continues to trust in God. The knowledge of his lawyer was able to deliver him from the sentence.
Do you realize how important you are to your city? When you are blessed the whole city is blessed and rejoices. I love to see new businesses come in and old businesses prospering. It makes me feel blessed and secure. But the wicked can overthrow it with their mouth. The media has become one of the most powerful institutions. They can bless or curse and unfortunately they love to curse because it gets more attention. We will all be judged one day for every idle word that has come out of our mouth. (Mat. 12:36)

Thurs.'s Devo - Abundant Life

Read Pro. 11:7-8
Our hope is in the Lord and the resurrection of Jesus. Because he was the firstfruit to rise from the dead, we know that when we die we will be resurrected to new life. But, what do the unbelievers have to hope for? What they long for just dies. What they expect to find when they die is probably rest and peace or maybe a harem of women, or heaven. But that is not what he will receive. Hell is a real place and if we went there and came back, I bet we would be willing to talk about it and try to convince people they don't want to go there. We seem to skirt the issue because it sounds so bad. How could a loving God send anyone to hell? He doesn't - they choose on their own to go there. God does everything he can to show them truth but it is their decision.
The righteous will be delivered out of all his troubles both here and in death but the wicked will end up on the bottom both here and in death. The wicked may appear to be happy and blessed but there is no peace, joy or love apart from God so they are empty and tormented inside. Would you rather spend a few short years or struggle and eternity in heaven, or spend a luxurious life here and eternity in hell. Jesus came that we might have abundant life both here and in eternity.
Thank you, Lord that you went to the cross and conquered death and the grave that we might live abundantly here on earth and eternally with you in heaven.

Wed.'s Devo - Just Weight

Read Pro. 11:1-6
In the Old Testament they use to have scales that they used to weigh grain or gold or whatever they were selling. They would put the grain in one side and a weighted stone on the other side. If they wanted to cheat they would use a lighter or heavier weight depending on what they were weighing. They would keep two weights marked the same and if they were buying the wheat they would use the lighter weight and if they were selling they would use the heavier stone. In this way, they would make more money and cheat the other person. God hates cheating in business but he delights when we are fair. The humble and righteous will be given God's wisdom and guidance. They will profit and be delivered from God's wrath on the ungodly. This means that when the earth is experiencing hard times and judgment, the redeemed of God will be exempt. The ungodly may become rich, but their riches won't be able to save their soul. They will inherit shame, God's wrath, and retribution.
Thanks you Lord, that you have the power to lift us up above the circumstances.

Tues.'s Devo - It is a Choice

Read Pro. 10:26-32
I'm not sure what vinegar does to your teeth except maybe take the enamel off but I know what smoke does to your eyes: it is very irritating. That is how an employer feels about a lazy employee. The next few verses contrast the life of the wicked with the life of the godly. The wicked will have a short life-span, his dreams will die, destruction will follow him, and he will not have an inheritance that will last, his voice will not be heard, and what he does say will be lies. The righteous, however, will have a prolonged life-span, they will hope with joy, God's way is their strength, their inheritance will possess the land, when they speak it will be the words of God, and they will understand what pleases God. What a contrast! Who would choose not to follow God? It is a mystery that people can not seem to see the folly of sin and the reward of righteousness, but their eyes have been closed and they cannot believe the truth because they can't understand it. That is why Jesus said, blessed are your eyes because you do see and your ears because they do hear.
Thank you Lord, for revealing yourself to us so that we can choose rightly.

Mon.'s Devo. - A Firm Foundation

Read Pro. 10:23-25
Fools look for a way to break the law. I was watching a Bruce Willis movie the other night and this young kid had hacked into the government computer and scrambled the network just to see if he could. He caused all kind of chaos and almost lost his life because he just wanted to do mischief for the heck of it. If he had been a man of wisdom he would have used his talent for writing a security system that would have kept our government records safe.
People without God live in fear because it is them against the world or better said, them against Satan and they don't stand a chance. So whatever they imagine and speak comes upon them. They speak fear and violence; they reap fear and violence. But the things God has placed in the heart of the godly will come to pass. That is why it is so important to speak of hope and faith. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Pro. 18:21. Do you want to eat the fruit of death or life?
The wicked are blow over by the smallest puff of wind but the godly stand on a foundation that cannot be shaken.
Lord, we stand on your foundation speaking your words of life and truth. We choose to eat the fruit from the tree of life.

Fri.'s Devo - The Secret of Success

Read Pro. 10:22
It is the blessing of God to give us abundance. It is ashamed that Christians think it is godly to be poor. When Jesus multiplied the fish and bread he had more than enough every time. He wants to not only meet our needs but give us more than enough so we can enjoy his blessings and turn around and meet someone else's needs. His riches add no sorrow with them. To have an abundance of money without God's wisdom is sorrowful. The love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself. God is looking for a people he can pour money into their coffers so they can use it for the kingdom. God is the wealthiest being on the planet and we are his children. He loves to share with us and bless us but he loves us too much to give us something that is going to destroy us. The secret of wealth is your heart. If you realize that nothing on this earth is ours and God and his kingdom are the only thing worth seeking then you will seek him above everything else. Then God can trust you with everything else. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Mat. 6:33

Thurs.'s Devo - Words of Life

Read Pro. 10:18-21
These verses have to do with our words. James says that the tongue is a little member but it can kindle a fire and burn the course of nature. Our words are so important. I know that women need to talk. Study has shown that we say about 10,000 more words a day than men because we have the need to express ourselves through conversation. I started meeting a friend for breakfast every Thurs. morning over a year ago. I realized early-on that we needed a purpose and a guide for our conversation or it would be idle talk and gossip so I bought us both a little book for us to write our prayer requests on and pray about during the week. If we thought of something we wanted to remember to bring up we could write it in the book. That has been a real boundary. Then, I realized that she had the same love for studying the Bible that I did, so I suggested we bring our Bibles and share with each other what God had been showing us. We have had so many meaningful conversations and it has been a real guide for our mouths so that we don't fall into idle talking. Verse 20 says that the tongue of the just is as choice silver. That is what I want my tongue to be. What comes out of our mouths should feed people just like the Word of God feeds our spirit.
