Read Gen. 13:1-18
Abram comes out of Egypt back into his land. He is very rich in possessions because God has prospered him. He goes back to the place God spoke to him last and called on God to help. (Beth-el means “house of God”.) God had also blessed his nephew with lots of cattle and possessions so that they both needed their own land. Their shepherds did not get along because they fought over the good pasture. So Abram told Lot to choose which land he wanted and Abram would go the opposite way. Lot surveyed the land and saw that the plain of Jordan had rich land and streams for water and cities already established so he chose to go east. Abram went west which was Canaan. Abram’s land was undeveloped and rough. Lot’s land was fertile and had cities. Lot chose the easy city life with godless people as his neighbor. When Lot had left, God told Abram to look in all directions because all the land was to be his. His seed would be numbered as much as the dust... so many that it would be impossible to count. Abram lived in the plain of Mamre (causing fatness) which was in Hebron (communion). So we can assume that this was a time when Abram had communion with God and his soul was made fat with the richness of God. He immediately built him an altar where he could go and meet with God. What a contrast to Lot who placed the door of his tent so he could see Sodom first thing every morning. Lot set himself up for a fall when Abram set him self in position for an encounter with God. How we position ourselves will constitute what we will get from God or from the devil. They both want us in their control but only one is working for our good.
Lord, help us to remember this as we have choices of where we position ourselves today. Let us position ourselves so that we can hear your voice and obey you.
