Fri.’s Devo - The Story of Abram

Read Gen. 11:10- 12:5

Everything, especially time was altered after the flood. For example: Adam’s son, Seth, lived 105 years before he ever had a son which was not uncommon. After the flood, they were having their first child in their 30’s. Their life-spans were greatly shortened from 800-900 years to about 200-300 years.

As we go through all the generations of Noah we get to Abram who was the oldest of the three sons of Terah. His younger brother, Haran died leaving a son, Lot. Abram married Sarai but she was barren and had no children. Terah, Abram’s father moved his family to the land of Haran which was named after Terah’s 3rd son that died. Haran means “their mountain” so we can suppose that this land was mountainous. It was there that Abram’s father, Terah died. After this, God spoke to Abram and told him to leave the land of his family and moved to a undisclosed land he was going to show him. What a picture of God telling us to leave the curses of our past and move to a new place of blessings. When Abram did this, God promised to bless him, cause everyone else to bless him, and cause him to be a blessing to the whole earth. That is the result of obedience every time: God will bless us, man will bless us, and we will bless everyone. It doesn’t get much better than that. (So why would we not obey?) Abram did obey God. He left all he had ever known and all of his family except his wife and his nephew, Lot and his servants. They left Haran and went to Canaan.

Lord, thank you for your benefits. It is such an honor to obey you. Help us to learn first-time obedience.
