Thurs.’s Devo - The Forces of Evil

Read Gen. 14:5-7

The Rephaims mean “the dead; giants” which makes me think of Gen 6 when the sons of God came down and had sex with the daughters of men and their offsprings were giants. They were from Asheroth Karnaim which means “doubled-horned deities”. Horns speak of powers. The next group were the Zuzims which means “roving creatures”. Ham means “he raged”. So they were mad, roving creatures. The third group was the Emims which means “terror doubled”. The last group was the Horites which means “cave-like”. (I can only imagine what they looked like.) My question was answered when I looked up the meaning of where they were from. “Seir” means “shaggy, hairy, goat-like”. Meet the X-men of the Bible. Now we know how Hollywood gets their ideas. Remember, there is nothing new under the sun. These are the groups of people or creatures that Chedorlaomer conquered and put under his power. His name means “one who binds, or generation of a handful”. I would say they were a handful!

They met at En-mishpat which means “fount of judgment” which is also called Kadesh (“a sanctuary”). From there they went and conquered the Amalekites (“perverseness”) and the Amorites (“the sayers”) that dwelt in Hazezon-tamar (“those that steal and bring division”). Every name that Chedorlaomer conquers, it comes under his power and he adds it to his arsenal. The same is true in the positive. What ever demon we bring under our feet, it now has to serve us.

Lord, help us to learn that we live in a natural body in a spiritual world. By your strength, we will conquer the giants in our land and lay them at your feet.
