Thurs.’s Devo - The Tower of Babel

Read Gen. 11:1-9

When it says that the earth was of one language and speech it means that not only did they speak the same tongue, but they spoke the same opinion. There was no new thought or doctrine. These type of people are usually led astray easily because they don’t think for themselves, they just follow the crowd. This is how cults are started. God had given Noah the command to spread out and replenish the earth. This large group of people had decided that they would stay in the area of Shinar. Shinar is located in a fertile valley between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. This could have been around the area of the Garden of Eden because both of those rivers were located in the Garden of Eden. They settled here to build a city. In this city they decided they could build a portal to heaven in the form of this tower. It was not only a physical tower, but a spiritual portal. When God looked at it he knew that they would accomplish this because they were one in their efforts and spirit which is a great key to getting things done in the spirit. That is why our prayers are so much more powerful when we agree with another believer. In Matt. 18:19,20, Jesus said, “if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Jesus was talking about the power of two people but in Shinar there were hundreds of people agreeing. So they had an abundance of spiritual power. God’s counterattack was to confuse their languages so they couldn’t agree anymore with their mouth. Our power comes from the spirit inside us and what we speak with our mouths. When they could no longer agree with their mouths they broke up and dispersed upon the earth like they were suppose to do in the first place. The name of this place was called Babel which means confusion by mixture. From it we get Babylon which is Satan’s seat in Revelations.

Lord, let us remember this: that our agreements and our words are very powerful. May we use our mouths to speak blessings and build your kingdom.
