Read 2 Sam 14
I see over and over how if someone wants to get the king to see something, they concoct a hypothetical situation that will get the point across. It is a word picture. The Bible is full of them. Well, Joab wanted the king to bring Absalom back to the city and the king didn't want to. So Joab pays this actress to go and tell the king a similar story about a son that was in danger of being killed. If he died there would be no one to carry on the line and she would have no inheritance. There it is again, the inheritance thing. It was so strong in the OT, I think we are missing something. What is God trying to tell us about inheritance?
"Inheritance" in the Hebrew means "occupancy" or possession; something that is passed down". It is mentioned 239 times in the Bible so it must be important. In the OT the inheritance from God was the Promise Land and a future. The times "inheritance" is mentioned in the New Testament it always refers to the promises in the OT. It is like he has already given them, but he is telling us we can still have them. Deuteronomy 28 is full of promises and blessings: It covers everything we could possible think of. You can claim them for you and your household. 2 Pet. 1:4 says that these promises are given to us so that by them we might be partakers of the divine nature and escape the corruption that is in the world through lust. Now that's a promise!!!
