Tues.'s Devo - The Hyssop

Read John 19:25-30
Jesus is on the cross and three Mary's are below: his mother, his aunt, and the prostitute who anointed him for burial. Jesus, who came to save the whole earth made sure his earthly mother was taken care of before he left this earth. That was his way of honoring her for allowing herself to be used by God to bring him forth. She loved him and raised him undergoing persecution and misunderstanding. She had stood by him till the end and he did not forget her. And then, to fulfill scripture he said, "I thirst." It was like he was following a script. What he said was not prophesy but what they did next was. They brought a vessel full of vinegar, filled a sponge with the vinegar, put it upon a hyssop and put it to his mouth. When he had received the vinegar he said, "It is finished:" and bowed his head and gave up the ghost.
In Exodus, the man of the house was to apply the blood with the hyssop and strike the lintel and two side posts with the blood of the lamb. The door was a picture of Jesus and the blood was applied to every place Jesus would be pierced.
The hyssop was also used in cleansing a person from leprosy. This time they used a bird to represent Jesus. It was also used by the priest to proclaim a house free of leprosy and a person clean from touching the dead. Hebrews tells us that the priest used hyssop to sprinkle the book and all the people to cleanse them.
Jesus, on the cross tasted the bitterness of sin in that vinegar. It was raised on a hyssop because that was the instrument God used to represent his hand. Jesus received from God's hand the bitterness of sin to cleanse us from the sin we were saturated in. His blood cleansed us from our sins.
How do we say thanks?
