Mon.’s Devo - The Heart of the Matter

Read Luke 16:1-15 This parable about the unrighteous steward is a parable of service: you will either serve God of the things of this world. The steward in the parable was exposed for dealing unwise with his bosses money. When his boss called him on it and asked for a final account of his stewardship he had to get crafty. He knew if he lost his job he would need friends to help him so he decided to buy some with his bosses money. So he went and talked to everyone who owed his boss money. He discounted their amount and gave them a lower bill. When the boss found out what he had done he applauded his craftiness. The steward and the clients were all wrong and they would spend eternity together. Then Jesus made the statement that if you are unfaithful in the way you do business here on earth, then you will be unfaithful to godly things. God will trust his riches to those who deal faithfully here on earth. It does matter how we live our lives and conduct our business. The way we transact our daily lives shows what we trust in. We cannot serve God and serve ourselves. When Jesus told this parable it made the Pharisees who were covetous mad. Jesus gave them no slack and told them they could justify their actions before men and look righteous but God knew their hearts. The things that man honors and values is not the things God honors and values. Man recognizes wealth and external things but God always sees the purity of the heart. Lord, when you look at our heart, may you be pleased.
